According to Apib, the death occurred after a conflict between indigenous people, police and farmers in the city of Potiraguá, in the south of the state.
Nega Pataxó, sister of chief Nailton Muniz Pataxó, from the Pataxó-hã-hã-hãe indigenous people, was murdered on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 21, 2024) after a conflict between indigenous people, military police and farmers in the Caramuru territory, municipality of Potiraguá, in the extreme south of Bahia. The information is from Apib (Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil).
According to Apib, in addition to her, the chief and another indigenous leader were shot. Their health status was not reported.
Two people were beaten, a woman had her arm broken and other people were hospitalized, but not seriously. Two farmers were arrested for illegally carrying a weapon.
According to Apib, the retaking of a farm by the indigenous people as part of the Caramuru territory began in the early hours of Saturday (Jan. 20).
After the mobilization of ruralists in the region via WhastApp, the indigenous people were surrounded by men who arrived at the site with dozens of pickup trucks. The mobilization via the internet called on farmers and traders to repossess the farm with their own hands.
“The region faces the abuses of invading farmers who claim to be owners of traditional lands and accuse the people of being 'fake Indians'. The approval of the time frame accentuates the intransigence of the invaders, who feel authorized to practice all types of violence against people”, said Apib.
Videos show one of the injured on the ground, surrounded by a group of ruralists celebrating the violent action, according to Apib. The entity said that police officers had participated in the violence against indigenous people.
“We demand monitoring by the authorities and investigation of the case. We reiterate that the demarcation of indigenous lands is the only way to alleviate the escalation of violence affecting the people of the southern region of Bahia”, reads a note from Apib.
