Avenida São João, in the central region of São Paulo, will receive this Sunday, the 21st, the first test of closing the road for vehicles. The idea is to carry out an experiment that aims to include the site in the Open Streets Program, created in 2016, to promote cultural and leisure activities.
From 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday, a 1.5 km stretch of Avenida São João, between Elevado Presidente João Goulart, Minhocão, and Largo do Paiçandu, will be temporarily closed to vehicle circulation and open exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists , as is already happening on four streets in the Liberdade neighborhood and on Avenida Paulista.
On the road that is among the most famous in the city, the program began under doubt, but later became established as a leisure option. The São João region has faced a series of problems, such as the increase in robberies, the increase in homelessness and the spread of Cracolândia.
The population will be able to give their opinion on this new experience in the center of the capital until February 8th, on the Participe Mais portal, from City Hall. The intention of the research is to assess the interest of residents and visitors and also its impacts on safety, traffic and commerce in the region with the temporary closures.
To make the test possible, the route of 31 bus lines will be diverted from 6:30 am to 4 pm, between Rua Helvétia and Vale do Anhangabaú. The changes can be consulted on the City Hall website. CET is also expected to monitor traffic in the region over the weekend, with closures expected throughout the morning until late afternoon.
According to City Hall, Ruas Abertas prioritizes offering conditions that encourage people to remain on streets and avenues with exclusive access for pedestrians on Sundays and holidays, with the support of municipal agents to monitor vehicle traffic.
Furthermore, in the long term, the program also foresees the execution of permanent works to expand living and leisure spaces, strengthen local commerce and reduce environmental impact.
Since 2016, Avenida Paulista has been part of the Open Streets Program. In October 2023, the program was expanded to the Liberdade region. On Sundays and holidays, four streets are closed to vehicle traffic.
