Medicines | Problems with the availability of ADHD drugs will continue this year as well

As the availability problems continue, some have to go to the doctor, because there may not be a substitute product for the adhd medicine they are using.

Activity and attentiveness Disruption Disruptions in the availability of medicines used to treat ADHD will continue this year as well, says the division manager and chief pharmacist of the pharmaceutical safety and development center Fimea Johanna Linnolahti.

The availability of medicines is constantly changing, he states.

“At the moment, there are disruptions in the availability of 17 medicinal product packages in the drug group, which also includes ADHD drugs.”

At the moment, the vast majority of disruptions are estimated to end in January–February, but some of the disruptions may continue even after that, says Linnolahti. For some medicines, the availability problems may not end until May.

“Of course, this information can be constantly updated when batches of medicine arrive in Finland.”

Increased demand is one of the most common reasons for availability problems, says Linnolahti. Production capacity problems also cause difficulties.

Inspector general Julia Lehtinen From Fime told HS in the fallthat the capacity problem is often caused by the fact that demand is growing in the world, but production is not keeping up.

What if there is no substitute for the missing drug? For example, there is currently a shortage of a certain strength of the drug Equasym Retard used to treat ADHD, and there are no substitutes for it.

The user of the medicine should contact the person who prescribed the medicine if the pharmacy is unable to offer a substitute medicine during the availability disruption, advises Linnolahti.

“The need for substitute treatment is always assessed by the attending physician.”
