At the beginning of the year, the traffic light government experienced a new setback. A survey shows that the parties can expect significant losses.
Munich – It is a bitter setback for Christian Lindner and his FDP. In the first survey of the new year, the Free Democrats performed poorly and, in contrast to the results of the federal election in 2021, ended up behind the AfD. Other parties in the Bundestag are also likely to be annoyed by poor values.
The first trend barometer from RTL and n-tv, carried out by Forsa, shows a disappointing result for the federal government. Not only is the FDP receiving less support and would not make it into the Bundestag in an election at this time, but according to the survey, the SPD and Alliance 90/The Greens would also receive fewer votes than in the 2021 federal election.
Trend barometer highlights problems in the federal government: FDP slips below the five percent mark
The traffic light coalition is repeatedly criticized. It's not just the farmers who are showing their frustration during protests, new survey results also show the clear problems facing the ruling parties. If parliament had been elected last week, the SPD, Greens and FDP would have a combined approval rating of 33 percent, three points ahead of the CDU/CSU. The FDP in particular had to accept a severe setback at the beginning of the year, as they slipped below the five percent limit in the survey and would therefore not get into the Bundestag.
She sees it differently Evaluation at the AfD. For the sixth month in a row they have achieved values of more than 20 percent. The party starts 2024 with 22 percent behind the CDU/CSU with 30 percent. The SPD gets 15 percent and the Greens are close behind with 14 percent. The FDP and the Left are behind with four percent each.

The question about the Chancellor: Merz is ahead in the current survey
Those surveyed also have a clear opinion about the position of Chancellor. While Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) only has 15 percent, 24 percent can imagine Friedrich Merz (CDU) in the position. The Green Party's top candidates Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck each receive 15 percent. As a result, Unio
n faction leader Merz continues to be the most popular among the likely candidates for chancellor at the start of the new year.
In the survey on political competence, seven percent each trust the SPD, the Greens and the AfD to solve the problems in Germany. The FDP only has two percent, while the CDU/CSU has the highest figure of all parties at 16 percent. One obstacle, however, is that 58 percent of survey participants do not trust any party to be politically competent.
The evaluation of the topics of interest from the first week of the year also sheds light on the matter. For matters relating to Ukraine war 36 percent of people are interested. This was followed by topics relating to flooding at 29 percent. While 27 percent of respondents are interested in the Middle East conflict, 25 percent are interested in the federal government. The budget crisis that was controversial a few weeks ago was only of interest to eleven percent in the first week of 2024. (Denise Dörries)
