Scorsese's film Vaitiolo was based on the work of the same Japanese author.
Supervisor Martin Scorsese confirms the Los Angeles Times in a new broad in the interviewthat the subject of his next film is Jesus. Filming will begin later this year.
Scorsese says they finished the script together by Kent Jones with. It is based on one of Scorsese's favorite Japanese writers Shusaku Endo (1923–1996) to a book about the life of Jesus.
Endo wrote that Jesus, who suffered from an identity crisis, received mockery and contempt until his crucifixion, but the essence of his message was still in the double commandment of love.
“The beauty and power of Christianity is manifested in this human struggle, not in the architecture of great cathedrals or the power of crusading armies,” Endo reminded.
Scorsese intends to make the film “timeless” without losing sight of modern times. After many quite large films, he envisions the length of the film to be a compact 80 minutes.
According to Scorsese, the goal is to uncover the essence of Jesus' teaching without preaching. Even though religion itself, in the director's opinion, has failed in many ways, it does not mean that the original impulse is necessarily wrong.
“It's worth thinking about. And even if you reject it, it can still affect how you live your life.”
Scorsese's one of the strongest films of the late period Silence (Silence, 2016) was also based on Shusaku Endo's book. At turns cruel and contemplative, the film told about missionaries and their struggle for faith in 17th-century Japan.
Scorsese's first Jesus film was The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). The film, which irritated some religious circles, was based on Níkos Kazantzákis to the book The last temptation (1955).
The director spoke for the first time about a possible new Jesus film back in May after visiting Italy for a conference on Catholic aesthetics and meeting Pope Francis.
Scorsese's latest film is Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). It received one Golden Globe award last Sunday when Lily Gladstone was awarded for the best supporting role in a drama film.
The film has also been tipped for possible Oscar success.
