GSD has published its annual report on the UK video games market, covering the 2023revealing that EA Sports FC 24 it was the best-selling game ever, while PS5 has dominated in the console field.
In total, 38 million video games were sold between the physical and digital markets, recording an increase of 2.6% compared to the previous year.
Despite the success, sales of EA Sports FC 24 fell by 8.4% compared to FIFA 23, which itself benefited from the driving force of the Football World Cup.
The year was also profitable for Warner Bros. Games, with Hogwarts Legacy placing in second position. The previous year he had launched LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga which had reached third position in the annual ranking.
Of note, the Harry Potter RPG beat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in terms of sales. It was also the best-selling game of all time physical marketa result made possible by the launch on a multitude of platforms (PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 39% less than its predecessor, probably because many perceived it as a kind of DLC for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, even though it wasn't.
EA Sports FC 24, Hogwarts Legacy, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are all games that have had PlayStation as a marketing partner.
2023 was not a banner year for new intellectual properties. The first in the ranking is Starfield, which however only reached 31st position. In 2022 Elden Ring reached fourth position and in 2023 it is in classic 28th position, above Bethesda's title.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 reached number 5 on the chart, followed by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Overall, it was a good year for Disney's intellectual properties.
Note that GSD's data does not take into account digital sales of Nintendo, which the Japanese company does not provide. So the games from the house of Mario are only ranked based on physical sales. The result is that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is in ninth position and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in eleventh. They would probably both be higher if it had been possible to add digital copies to the total sales.
It should also be said that some games are missing from the ranking because their publishers do not provide data to GSD. The most obvious is definitely Baldur's Gate 3.
