Shouting “no amnesty”, protesters called, on Monday night (8), in the capital of São Paulo, for punishment for all participants in the coup attempt on January 8, 2023, which took place in Brasília. The demonstration, called by the Frente Brasil Popular (FBP) and Povo e Sem Medo, was held in front of the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp), in the central region of the city.
National coordinator of the Central de Movimentos Populares (CMP) and member of the national coordination of the FBP, Raimundo Bomfim, defended the accountability of those involved so that new coup attempts do not occur again. “No amnesty for those who carried out the acts, for those who went there, damaged, vandalized public property, who carried out the act, but also for those who were the masterminds of the coup and the financiers,” he said.

“It is necessary to prosecute, investigate, hold accountable, including the former president of the republic [Jair Bolsonaro]. Because, obviously, no one would do this if they didn't have the former President of the Republic behind them. So, the military, all of them, regardless of their position, have to be prosecuted,” he added.
One year after the coup acts, of the more than two thousand detained, 66 investigated remain in prison for the incitement, financing and execution of the acts. The others under investigation were released and had their prison sentences replaced by precautionary measures, such as the use of electronic ankle bracelets, a ban on leaving the country, suspension of gun permits and Collector, Shooter and Hunter (CAC) certificates, delivery of passports and weekly presentation to the Court.
Marcelo Correia, from the Union of Black Women and Negroes for Equality (Unegro), highlighted that the country had the strength to keep democracy intact even with the coup attempt, which turns one year old this Monday. “We kept democracy intact in our country. And it is in democracy where we can advance politically, where we can combat racism, where we can talk about human dignity, where we can talk about access to education, access to health, and access to culture”.
Among the entities participating in the demonstration were also the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), the Workers' Party (PT), parliamentarians from Psol, Popular Unit for Socialism (UP), National Union of Students (UNE), and Workers' Movement Homeless (MTST).
