Some winter sports enthusiasts did not let the piste closure in the Zillertal deter them. A TikTok video shows the slippery maneuvers.
Munich – Black slopes are not for everyone, especially not when they are closed. However, skiers and snowboarders in the Zillertal did not let the poor conditions deter them and skied down the infamous valley run “Number 10” – with painful consequences, as a video that is currently going viral on TikTok shows.
Skiers slide on icy slopes despite the closure: There are injuries
At the beginning of January 2024, a user published a compilation of several “horror accidents” in the Zillertal on TikTok: Winter athletes can be seen sliding towards the valley at high speed on steep and icy terrain. “To clarify: the slope was closed and no, no one could ski down it,” said the creator. He also wrote that no one was injured.
However, according to local authorities, accidents and injuries are said to have occurred – although they were not serious. In the comments to the TikTok video, a user writes: “I'm also in Zillertal, I broke my foot and two broken fingers.” No wonder, considering that the valley run has been closed for some time.
“Horror accidents” due to icy slopes: too little snow for safe operation
The Zillertal Arena once again pointed out the closure separately on its social media channels and made it clear: “We are not liable for any accidents on closed slopes.” However, all other valley runs are open. The comments on the Instagram post continue: “The valley run is impassable in the lower area due to a lack of snow and massive black ice caused by rain.”
The Zillertal Arena asks for patience and writes that the valley run will be opened “as soon as safe operation with sufficient snow is possible.” The viral TikTok video also shows how acute the lack of snow is in the Austrian ski region. Brave winter sports enthusiasts should have realized by now that artificial snow is not always the solution.
Meanwhile, TikTok users are making fun of the negligence of some skiers and snowboarders. One person writes: “My ego says I’ve done it.” Another comments: “In the Zillertal it only snows where it needs snow, that’s called sustainability.” Another user says: “If you can’t read, you have to feel.” So pity is limited.
It was only on January 3, 2024 that a tragic skiing accident occurred in the Innsbruck-Land district of Tyrol: a 14-year-old girl came off the slopes and died on site. (cln)
