The Ukraine war arrives in Russia. In Belgorod the first residents are being evacuated. Children should be distributed to other schools.
Belgorod – Its location is becoming more and more of a problem for Belgorod. The Russian city with around 350,000 inhabitants is less than 40 kilometers away from Ukraine. Even though parts of the eastern oblasts since the beginning of the Ukraine war are under Russian control.

How dangerous the people in Belgorod currently live was shown shortly before the turn of the year when the city was heavily shelled from Ukraine. Around two dozen people are said to have died and more than 100 were injured, which cannot be independently verified.
That Ukraine from Russia being covered in bombardments has long been a cruel reality. But in the aggressor's country, long after the invasion began, people were largely able to move freely without fearing for their lives. Those who condemned Vladimir Putin's war – or called it a war at all – were in danger.
Evacuations in Belgorod: Russia responds to air strikes from Ukraine
Now, however, the residents of Belgorod can no longer be sure of their lives because of the Ukrainian air strikes. Due to new shelling on January 4th, the Christmas mass planned for the weekend was canceled, and in several communities the Christmas holidays were extended until January 19th.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, said on his Telegram channel There were even initial evacuations. Around 300 residents decided to move temporarily. They were accommodated in emergency accommodation.
The politician also wrote on Monday (January 8th) that 1,300 applications had been received within 24 hours to send children from Belgorod to schools abroad. He has already contacted his colleagues from the Voronezh, Kaluga, Tambov and Yaroslavl regions to see where the students could be sent.
Similar ordeals have long been part of sad everyday life for many people in Ukraine.
New attacks on Belgorod: Governor speaks of artillery and mortar shells
Gladkov also reported further air strikes on Belgorod and the surrounding villages, including dozens of artillery and mortar shells. However, there were no injuries or damage caused by the latest attacks.
After a meeting, the governor also informed that 944 residential buildings had been affected as a result of the shelling at the end of December. He pushed for rapid progress with the repairs.
Things look different on the battlefield. The invaders have made little progress on the front for months, the losses are adding up, Putin's dream of overthrowing the president's government Volodymyr Zelensky that seems to be exactly what remains. (mg)
