The news was in the air and was confirmed in the early afternoon today. Williams will continue to use Mercedes power units in the coming years, including the new era that Formula 1 will face starting from 2026.
Williams released the official statement this afternoon. This reads like this: “We are pleased to announce that Mercedes-Benz will be the team's power unit supplier from the 2026 Formula 1 season, demonstrating the continuation of a successful and long-lasting partnership.”
“The decision to extend the partnership into the new era of technical regulations, which will begin in 2026, reinforces the commitment to excellence and innovation between the parties. This announcement marks a significant step forward in the long-term relationship between Williams and Mercedes , which began at the beginning of the hybrid era in 2014.”
From 2026, F1 engines will be able to use exclusively 100% sustainable fuels, thus adhering to high sustainability criteria, thus reducing petrol consumption.
The new power units that will be used in 2026 will have electrical systems that will guarantee more advanced performance, using a single 350 kW electric motor (the MGU-K), which will be almost three times more powerful than the current one.
“We have enjoyed a long-term partnership with Mercedes-Benz and are excited to extend this collaboration into the next era of Formula 1,” commented James Vowles, Team Principal, following the announcement.
“The experience, support and technology that Mercedes provides are perfectly in line with our team's medium and long-term aspirations.”
“This long-term agreement with Mercedes is a positive step and fits into our goals for the future, although we will continue to maintain our design and manufacturing expertise and capabilities within the team.”
Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, added: “We are pleased to confirm Williams Racing as the second customer team we will supply for the 2026 power unit regulations.”
“Today’s news underlines the strength of the Mercedes-Benz offering in F1 and, importantly, not only validates but strengthens our global motorsport strategy.”
“Since 2014 we have continued to build and develop our relationship with Williams. As the team continues to lay the foundations to challenge the front of the grid, we look forward to supporting them with our supply of power units.”
