Sources interviewed by the WSJ fear that Musk's drug use threatens both his health and the companies he runs.

In particular, the billionaire uses ketamine, for which he has a prescription. Musk has previously said that he uses ketamine to treat depression.

Musk's lawyer Alex Spiro told the WSJ that Musk is tested for drugs regularly and randomly aboard Space X, and that he has never failed a drug test. According to Spiro, there are errors in the WSJ story, but he did not identify them.

According to the WSJ, a member of the Tesla board Linda Johnson Rice was not available in 2019 for another term on the board after two years, because he was frustrated with Musk's behavior and worried about his drug use.
