President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, announced this Wednesday (6), in Rio de Janeiro, the accreditation of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) as a higher education institution and the authorization for the start of activities at IMPA Tech, the institute’s first undergraduate course.
Free of charge, IMPA Tech aims to enable students to effectively enter the technology and innovation market. Located in Porto Maravalley – hub of technology developed by Rio City Hall in the city’s port area, the graduation will share a 10,000 m² warehouse with startups and technology companies.
Impa Tech’s bachelor’s degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation, which begins in 2024, will serve up to 100 students in the first year, with investments of R$16.7 million, and 400 students, at the end of four years, at an annual cost of R$55.9 million. Federal government resources will be transferred to IMPA by the ministries of Education and Science, Technology and Innovation. Students will also have housing, offered by the city of Rio de Janeiro, and financial support.

“Brazil has always treated investment in education as an expense. And when you list education as an expense, and you make a budget, there is always someone who says they are spending too much. And when you say you’re spending too much, you start cutting back. Cutting education means lowering quality, paying less salaries, hiring fewer teachers and teaching is of worse quality,” said Lula.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, highlighted that mathematics is transversal and permeates all areas of knowledge. “Mathematics will be applied, it will be realized in innovation. This is the great challenge for everyone who develops research and innovation in our country today”.
“Impa Tech is a partnership between Impa and the federal government and the City of Rio de Janeiro. Let’s create a degree that opens up more paths for these young people at the end of high school. A free graduation that will select students from among the winners of the Olympics in order to bring the most talented young people from across the country and that will reach disadvantaged students”, said Marcelo Viana, general director of Impa.
Selective process
For 2024, the competition will use students’ performance in olympiads knowledge and the National High School Exam (Enem). Up to 80 places will be offered to medalist students of level 3 (national award) of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), promoted by Impa; level 3 of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM); modalities A or B of the Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad (OBQ); levels 2 or 3 of the Brazilian Physics Olympiad (OBF); and the programming modality at levels 1 or 2 (High School) of the Brazilian Informatics Olympiad (OBI). According to the notice, each medal will guarantee a different score in the IMPA Tech selection process.
Another 20 vacancies will be available for candidates with better performance in Mathematics in Enem.
Registration for graduation must be made on the website impatech.impa.br until December 28th.
