The military leaders of Burkina Faso and Niger declared that they had abandoned the G5 anti-jihadist force in Sahel since November 29, one of the most conflictive regions in the world. They make the decision in the ninth year of validity. Mali was the first country to take that step in 2022.
The three nations, now governed by military regimes, were part of the G5, which was created in 2014 by five countries that agreed to deploy a joint counterterrorism force to fight jihadism in the Sahel, and were backed by France in 2017, when it was created. its military strength.
However, the military rulers of Burkina, Niger and Mali have accused Paris of exaggerating French deployments in their territories.
The organization is failing to achieve its objectives. Worse still, the legitimate ambitions of our countries, to make the G5 Sahel a zone of security and development, are hindered by the institutional bureaucracy of a previous era, which convinces us that our process of independence and dignity is not compatible with participation in the G5 in its current form, they stated.
Largely financed by the European Union, this force represented a way out in a region gripped by jihadist violence. However, the security situation in the Sahel has continued to deteriorate and little action has been taken.
Therefore, the heads of diplomacy of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso proposed on Friday night the creation of a new confederation with the ambition of finally achieving a federation called the Alliance of Sahel States.
