The Government of Ireland has reinforced the police presence in Dublin to prevent a repetition of last night’s violent riotswhich resulted in 34 detainees and several injured police officers and which has provoked the rejection of the coalition Executive between Christian Democrats, centrists and Greens.
The authorities do not rule out that groups of “extreme right” and “anti-immigration” “hooligans” will once again hide behind the stabbing of four people, three of them children, which occurred on Thursday to once again destroy the center of the capital.
The Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, warned this Friday that there are more protests scheduled through social networks for this weekend with the intention of repeating events that have “embarrassed” the entire country.
“I want to tell a nation that is restless and afraid that this does not represent us,” declared the president, who praised the response of citizens of “different nationalities” to reduce the attacker, whom he described as “authentic heroes of Ireland.”
“Yesterday, some decided that the best way to respond to that terrible event was to take to the streets of Dublin to terrorize, intimidate, loot and destroy”lamented Varadkar, of Indian origin and openly gay.
Disinformation on networks
The “taoiseach” (prime minister) confirmed today that two of those stabbed, a five-year-old girl and a worker at the school where the attack occurred, are in serious condition, while the other two minors are out of danger. .
The Irish Police (Garda) have arrested the alleged aggressor, who was also injured by a knife after being overpowered by pedestrians.and although he has not yet reported his identity or the reason for the attack, it is known that he was not born in this country but has an Irish passport.
Following this event, Social networks began to fill with information about the alleged Maghreb origin of the suspectwith content that the authorities consider could be considered hate messages.
In this sense, the social network TikTok, whose European operations base is in Dublinindicated today that it is “closely monitoring” the platform “since yesterday afternoon” and that it is “proactively removing any content that violates” its guidelines.
A spokesperson reiterated that the company “does not allow violent threats, incitement to violence or promotion of criminal activities that could harm people or property.”
Alert for more protests
For his part, Garda Chief Commissioner Drew Harris today promised to reinforce the police presence on the streets after the “enormous destruction” caused by “a riotous” and “radicalized” mob during the worst unrest in “decades.”
“We will carry out a fundamental review of our public order tactics, given the high level of violence. There will be significant organization and mobilization to prevent it,” the top police official said today.
Harris highlighted that the force has launched two “formal investigations” into the multiple stabbing and the riots, which resulted in the arrest of 34 people, 32 of whom appear before a judge today accused of various crimes.
The Garda confirmed that it deployed “more than 400” uniformed personnelincluding some 250 riot police, in the center of the capital to “deal with developing and evolving public order incidents and serious violent disorders.”
According to the force, the violent people, between 200 and 400 people -according to the authorities-, burned seven vehicles, including three city buses and a tram, while 11 police vehicles “suffered serious damage.”
Likewise, a “number of officers were injured” and 13 establishments “were attacked and substantially damaged,” especially sports stores, Harris said. “We cannot allow the city to be handed over to thugs, looters and arsonists,” observed the chief commissioner, who added that the injured five-year-old girl remains “in very serious condition,” while the woman is “in serious condition.”
