King Charles III is the star of Cake International, the cake designer competition taking place this weekend in Birmingham with thousands of visitors. Life size portrait, the ‘King Charles cake’, made of sponge cakeappears exactly as at the coronation, complete with ermine cloak, gem-studded crown, globe and scepter.
The most difficult part was the eyes, Welsh cake artist Emma Jayne explained to the BBC. A layer of gelatin was spread over the dough and then the ‘eating’ eyes were placed in an air fryer set to dehydrate for a day, to create a vivid look. “The detail of vividness is very important to me, especially when we’re talking about the king,” Jayne emphasized.
The head, with Carlo’s features faithfully reproduced even down to the wrinkles, was created with Rice Krispies, marshmallows and chocolate. The entire body of ‘His edible majesty’ was covered with 60 kg of sugar paste and painted with edible colors. The only thing that is not digestible are the gems of the crown, the scepter and the globe, made with the crystal kits of the zodiac signs, which are commonly found on sale for little, even on the internet.
