A TikToker’s video is being hotly debated online. She complains about her job, lack of money and free time. But not all users agree with her.
Munich – Getting up early, spending eight hours at work, coming home in the evening, cooking and going back to sleep – what sounds like a normal everyday life for most people brings one TikToker “to the biggest nervous breakdown ever”. On the social media platform TikTok a young woman complains tearfully about working life. The reactions don’t stop there. Many users smile at the young woman. “Is this comedy?” asks one user.
TikToker has “biggest nervous breakdown ever” over nine-to-five job
“What did I go to school for, did my Abitur, studied?” asks the TikToker, who is looking for a job, in her video, which has already been viewed over 1.5 million times. “There are people who want to give you 36,000 euros gross per year as full-time employees. But you also get 30 days of vacation a year,” says the woman with a desperate expression on her face. As a result, this means for them: no free time, no time for a partner or friends. At the weekend, the supposedly free time for shopping and household chores is wasted, as the woman goes on to say. She has to do a “job that doesn’t bring me any money and that I don’t enjoy,” she explains with tears in her eyes.
“When will we all finally wake up and check that we shouldn’t go to work anymore?” she asks. But the woman’s statements in the video are met with incomprehension by other users. “And then there are people who support their lives with three jobs and don’t have a nervous breakdown,” reads one comment. “Welcome to reality,” said another. “Girl, I work 42-48 hours a week minimum wage… work for free on Sundays and I’m not complaining,” one user wrote. “I, a nurse, have to cry and laugh at the same time,” writes another user.
TikToker responds to criticism: “Are you all okay?”
But the woman also finds more words to respond to this reaction in the comments. “I have to say, at first I was really shocked by all the comments, but now I only have one question: ‘Are you all okay?’ “You all complain in the comments about how bad you are,” she says in another video in which the woman reacts to the comments. But that’s exactly what her video should be about, she explains. She wants to show that the system and capitalism exempt you. A few companies seem to have already taken a different path. The four-day week is already being tested by some companies.
But she is not only laughed at. “I’m 40 now and actually at the end of my strength. I’m proud of the ‘younger generation’ who don’t just take it for granted,” writes one user. “I feel that very much. I don’t understand how this is supposed to be the majority of my life,” said another user. Another TikToker also reported on hers strenuous eight-hour days and that she no longer has any free time.
