A man armed with an alleged shotgun was arrested this Thursday (2), outside the headquarters of the Jewish Federation in Detroit, in the State of Michigan, United States.
The threat led employees there to be confined for part of the day, according to the newspaper Times of Israel.
The episode occurs amid an increase in cases of anti-Semitism in the country since the beginning of the war in the Middle East.
The Bloomfield Township Police Department, a suburb of Detroit, confirmed to Jewish Telegraphic Agency that “an armed man was taken to the police station, into custody, at 11:30 am”.
Michigan authorities reported that, after the episode, a police team was mobilized to operate in the region close to places of worship and schools attended by Jews for the rest of the day.
“We are confident that there is no threat to our community and that this was not a targeted attack,” said department community relations representative Nick Soley.
After opening an investigation against the suspect, the police and representatives of the Jewish federation held a joint press conference, where they stated that the weapon used by the man was a pellet gun, apparently made by him to “look like a real gun”. .
The suspect’s arrest comes less than a month after the stabbing death of Samantha Woll, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown synagogue, located in Detroit.
The police opened an investigation into the case and, for now, the motivation for the crime has not been identified.
