Giorgio Nada Editore’s new book is dedicated to the two most personal and fascinating Fiats of recent times. And the title leaves no doubt about the protagonists: “Fiat Coupé and Barchetta”.
Work by Ivan Scelsa (32 euros, format: 24.3×27 cm, 120 pages 120) and for the series “The cars that made history”, the book brings the two sports cars back to where they belong, precisely in the history of the car .
In fact, they were machines to whose definition important names such as Chris Bangle, Andreas Zapatinas and Mario Bianchi Anderloni contributed. And even Pininfarina for the beautiful interiors of the Coupé. Cars which, for many, were only unusual, but which instead brought Fiat back to the glories of true sports cars, the pure and simple barchetta, and the comfortable coupé for four, like a true grand tourer. All in an affordable market segment. One more difficulty.
There are many refinements on these cars, including construction ones: the “wand” handles, the engine and boot lids as hatches for the little boat or the entire front part which lifted for the coupé, which among other things had separate round headlights and a eye-catching external fuel cap all in aluminium. Here, the book retraces all this, without forgetting the stylistic genesis which was inextricably intertwined with the technical one. Also beautiful is the section with the testimonies of the protagonists of the time, in particular that of the imaginative Chris Bangle who explains why he designed the coupé with such a “cheeky” line. And if after reading you want to put a Coupé or Barchetta in your garage, the book will satisfy you, with a nice section dedicated to restoration and things to know before buying one.
