Human resources managers in Germany are skeptical when it comes to using AI to find skilled workers, manage applications or simplify human resources management processes. This is what a new survey shows.
TDespite increasing digitalization pressure and the debate about the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), human resources managers in Germany are still cautious here. 86 percent of them have concerns about the use of AI in their company, according to a survey conducted on Tuesday by the Munich Ifo Institute and the world’s largest recruiter Randstad.
“There is still a lot of uncertainty, especially in the personnel area,” said Ifo researcher Johanna Garnitz to the Reuters news agency. “This is still new territory for many.” There are also many details that still need to be clarified, for example around data protection.
Human resources managers most often cited a lack of know-how as the reason for their concerns (62 percent). According to Ifo, legal aspects are an issue for 48 percent, and 34 percent have a lack of trust in AI. For a quarter, a lack of acceptance is a hindrance to the use of AI. 22 percent see no added value through artificial intelligence. 19 percent are critical of the large amount of effort required for AI, and 18 percent are critical of the high costs.
Planning with fewer staff
Around five percent of the approximately 1,000 companies surveyed are currently using AI in the human resources department, and a further 25 percent are planning to do so. “HR managers see opportunities for AI in recruiting, applicant management and the automation of HR processes,” explained Garnitz.
Overall, 18 percent of the companies surveyed use AI, and another 35 percent have planned this for the future. According to the Ifo, around 13 percent of companies are planning to have fewer staff in the next five years due to the use of AI. This particularly affects retail (17 percent). In industry it is 15 percent and in service providers nine percent.
