In an interview before the WTT Champions in Frankfurt, national table tennis coach Jörg Roßkopf spoke out in favor of a task force to stem the flood of global tournaments and title fights.
Mr. Roßkopf, you were not there at the European Team Championships in Sweden in September, but instead trained individually at home with the top German players Dang Qiu, Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska. You said at the time that you weren’t happy with the players’ form because they hadn’t trained enough and played too many games. Next Sunday the WTT Champions starts in Frankfurt with the best players in the world. Are your players in better shape now?
Definitely. If you do something intensively for three weeks without any pressure, you can train very intensively. I wanted to make a statement. Tennis players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who have a similarly busy schedule as us table tennis players, also take blocks in which they just train. The matter was held up a bit high for us. It was a completely normal measure. The players were happy. And we were in the final at the European Championships without the three of them. So it’s all good.
