Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations) spoke on Monday night with the leader of the PP, André Fufuca, but party deputies did not accept the offer; Exchanges on the Esplanada will only be done at once and renovation is at a standstill
The Minister of Institutional Relations of the Presidency of the Republic, Alexandre Padilha (PT), offered on Monday (4.Sep.2023) in the evening the Ministry of Sport for the PP. The proposal was made in a long conversation with the deputy Andre Fufuca (PP-MA), who is leader of the party and candidate for minister.
Padilha said that the government would commit to increasing the Sport budget for 2024 if the PP accepted the vacancy. Fufuca spoke with members of his group (which has 49 deputies). The majority opinion was that the party should not accept Planalto’s proposal to occupy Esporte.
PP leaders think that going into sports would be a “downgrade” in relation to what the president himself Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) had signaled to the party that it was the handover of the Ministry of Social Development (albeit dehydrated from the Bolsa Família program).
With this refusal by the PP, the ministerial reform to incorporate the Centrão into the Lula government is stalled. At this stage of negotiations there are 2 parties discussing with Planalto about how participation in the federal administration could be: PP and Republicans.
There is an agreement between these two associations to only accept boarding in the government if all nominations are made at once – and not in a fragmented way. With the imminent refusal of the PP to go to Sport, the ministerial reform is at a standstill and may not evolve in the coming days, as Lula travels abroad.
There is also some irritation from Centrão leaders with the leaks of information promoted by the Planalto. On Monday (September 4, 2023), news outlets were flooded with information that the PP would be ready to accept the Ministry of Sports “on a budget” (expression disseminated by the government) for 2024. At night, this was not consummated.
The Lula government’s promise had been to hand over the Ministry of Social Development to the PP, and the Ministry of Ports and Airports to the Republicans. In addition, PP would take over the presidency of Caixa Econômica Federal and the Republicans would take over Funasa (National Health Foundation).
