Turkey wins the women’s European volleyball championship for the first time in its history at the end of a hard-fought final against Serbia bent only at the tie-break with partials of 25-27, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13. Second trophy of the season for the girls coached by the Italian coach Daniele Santarelli after the Nations League won last July.
Italy closes the 2023 European Championships with a bitter 4th place. After the 3-2 defeat in the semifinals against Turkey, the Azzurri also lose the challenge for the bronze with the Netherlands. In Brussels in the final the ‘oranges’ won 3-0 with partials of 25-23, 28-26, 25-20.
“A very sad ending because not playing this type of medal match is bad for our progress”, says coach Davide Mazzanti. “In three days we played the best game and today the worst game with little personality and we struggled in everything -adds Mazzanti-. We have never been in rhythm, always chasing and wasting so much, in the third set even less present than than before. It hurts very much for not having played and never changing the momentum of the game. We wanted to start a difficult game but not changing the momentum hurts us more than losing the medal”.
