The new Stellantis platform finally takes shape. Named STLA Mediumthis new global BEV-by-design architecture presented by the French-Italian group includes a number of cutting-edge characteristic elements, including over 700 km of autonomythe best figure in its category, but also energy efficiency, the amount of energy available on board and top-up charging power in its segment.
Focus on autonomy
In particular, the configuration of the STLA Medium platform has been developed to allow the construction of a wide variety of vehicles with different traction solutions in the market segments C and D, considered key by Stellantis. Let’s go back to the range for a moment: the maximum guaranteed range exceeds 700 km with the Performance package, while the Standard package offers over 500 km according to the WLTP procedure. The useful energy reaches 98 kWh, making this platform best-in-class in the amount of energy stored between the wheels.
Charging benefits
Furthermore, depending on its application, consumption may be less than 14 kWh per 100 kma value corresponding to the best energy efficiency in the category. Fast times also as regards recharging: owners will in fact be able to bring the battery charge level from 20% to 80% in 27 minutes, with a rate of 2.4 kWh per minute.
Type of vehicles
But which vehicles can be built on the basis of this architecture? First, they will be globally marketed vehicles, and available with front or all-wheel drive through the addition of a second electric propulsion module located at the rear, with an output between 160 and 285 kW. As for the types of bodywork, however, we are talking about sedans, crossovers and SUVs, all share some fundamental points: variable wheelbase between 2,700 and 2,900 mm, overall length of 4.3-4.9 metres, ground clearance that can exceed 220 mm to guarantee off-road capability and performance, and rims with a diameter up to at 750mm. In short, a rather flexible platform that guarantees lower battery assembly costs and better production volumes at the same time.
Speak Tavares
“What we see today is the product of just over two years of uncompromising innovation to deliver clean, safe and convenient mobility, and supported by investments of 30 billion euros in electrification and software up to 2025 – said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis – The STLA Medium platform demonstrates the high technological competence of Stellantis’ global technical community and its ability to deliver hyper-customer-focused products, rewriting long-established ideas about the concept of transportation, as we move towards zero carbon emissions by 2038“.
