Austrian monologue
Nine victories in the first nine races, to which are added the two successes in the Sprint races held. The first half of the 2023 World Cup has so far had only one master: la Red Bull. The Milton Keynes stable are -2 wins from McLaren’s historic winning record at the start of the 1988 championship and seriously threatens to succeed in winning all the Grands Prix of this championship. Certainly not a positive sign for a sport that continues to expand more and more around the world and which would certainly benefit more from a better balance in performance on the track, especially as regards the fight at the top.
Yet another cycle
However, Formula 1 is quite used to cycles of domination. In the last decade, in fact, only once has the world title been awarded to the last race between two drivers who did not belong to the same team: in the already legendary 2021 season. Before Red Bull, in fact, it was Mercedes that imposed its brand on the championship, taking eight Constructors’ titles and seven Drivers’ titles in eight seasons. The new cycle of the Red Bull-Verstappen duo can therefore represent a problem from the point of view of entertainment, but the leaders of world motorsport have clearly made it known that they cannot intervene to stem the Austrian giant.
The FIA cannot intervene
During an interview given to‘Associated Pressthe president of the FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem addressed precisely this issue, emphasizing how let the other teams have to take a step forward to be able to beat Red Bull: “If we talk about what is good or bad, we open a door – commented the number one of the international federation – I mean, it was good [il dominio] Mercedes? That’s it“. Ben Sulayem therefore clarified how the rival teams of Milton Keynes should not expect any regulation that will help them reduce the gap compared to the reigning champions.
“Wrong to punish the best”
“It’s time for Verstappen and Red Bull. What do we do, punish the kid who was good? – asked Ben Sulayem ironically – No, let’s go make sure that the other teams are good too. Nobody prevents other teams from being better. We cannot punish the people who have been the best, the ones who have tried the hardest. It’s not right“.
