The Tunisian Coast Guard announced on Friday that the death toll from the sinking of a migrant boat off the eastern coast of the country had risen to 32, after the recovery of eight additional bodies, as before, of migrants from countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
On Wednesday, the Coast Guard announced the sinking of a boat carrying migrants off the coast of Sfax governorate. On that day, 72 immigrants were rescued, while between 20 and 30 other immigrants were considered missing.
Among the bodies recovered on Friday, one belonged to a woman, according to a coast guard statement.
On Thursday, the Coast Guard recovered 14 bodies, including six women and a twenty-year-old Tunisian who was the captain of the boat.
The migrants set off from the coasts of Sfax governorate on a large wooden boat, hoping to reach the European coasts.
With the improvement of weather conditions, there has been an increase in recent times the frequency of attempts to cross the Mediterranean Sea by migrants hoping to reach the nearby Italian coasts.
Four migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were killed and 23 others were missing in two drowning accidents last weekend off the coast of Tunisia, while 53 others were rescued, according to Al-Masmoudi earlier.
