The surprise
In a season that, for the race for the world title, already seems reduced to a duel entirely internal to the Red Bull team after just three Grands Prix disputed, the great attention of enthusiasts in recent weeks has been reserved for the runners-up in the standings. In the analyzes of the pre-season tests, one wondered who would be the anti-Red Bull between Mercedes and Ferrari but nobody, not even the most optimistic of Fernando Alonso’s fans, thought that this role could be filled by theAston Martin. The Silverstone team, which had already done well in the Sakhir tests, was indicated at best as the favorite for the role of ‘better than the others’ and for the race for fourth place among the Constructors. Instead, here’s the revolution: three podiums in three races – all centered by Alonso – and place of honor in the standings.
Anti-Red Bull wanted
For a team that in its first two seasons under the Aston Martin name had always finished the championship in seventh place, this is a huge step forward, just think that between Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia, the team owned by Lawrence Stroll has already collected more points than he did in all the 2022 races. The desperate search for someone who can stem Red Bull’s dominance of the championship – combined with the fact that Aston Martin will have a significant amount of extra time allowed by the regulations to develop your car compared to the reigning champions – is already making many imagine a future for AMR23 as a possible antagonist of RB19.
Krack’s realism
However, the Aston Martin team principal took care of bringing everyone back down to earth, Mike Krack. The Luxembourg manager, in a long interview with the German site Auto Motor und Sport, in fact clearly explained that the road to conquering the title for his team is still very long. “Red Bull? There’s a difference between being self-confident and being arrogant. We are substantially behind them. Even if they were to stay put, the gap to make up in just one season would be large. Plus they have a different infrastructure, different firepower than ours”. Despite the great work done by the English team in creating the AMR23, according to Krack the team directed by Christian Horner is simply unattainable, at least for the moment.
Watch out for the pressure
“Where is Red Bull better? Everywhere. This is the difficult thing. If there was a specific area, it would be easier. Then we would know immediately what to do – added Krack again – we see that they are slightly better in all areas. Where this gap becomes very noticeable is at high speeds on the straights. Their car is more efficient. They have a greater DRS effect. This shows, of course. The 2 km/h in slow corners are not seen. But there are those too. This means that we have to improve in all areas”. Finally it is not to be underestimated a important mental aspect: Many of the men who work at the Aston Martin team are not used to fighting at the top. “Pressure is completely different Krack concluded. and the attitude changes. It requires maximum concentration from everyone, at all times. If you have a second-place car, finishing third is also a defeat. We need to get this mentality into everyone’s head and it’s not that easy. This creates pressure, and not everyone deals with pressure the same way. It is noticeable that some are more nervous”.
