On March 7, the Minister of Agriculture said he would be intransigent with the invasion of productive lands, as was the case with the extremist acts of January 8
The national leader of the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers), João Paulo Rodrigues, called the speech of the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Favarowho compared the land invasions to the extremist acts of January 8th.
“It is unfortunate to compare a terrorist act with a democratic act that is dirt to work. They are completely different things.”he said in an interview with a journalist on Tuesday (April 11, 2023).
During the inauguration of the new board FPA (Parliamentary Front for Agriculture), on March 7, Fávaro stated that he would be intransigent and repudiate the invasion of productive lands. “If we were intransigent with those who invaded the National Congress, we will be intransigent and we will repudiate invasions of productive lands”declared the minister.
For the MST leader, the issues are not comparable. “Our fight is for the democratization of the lands of Brazil. Unlike the action of the 8th [de Janeiro], which is an action against democracy”argued.
João Paulo Rodrigues defends that the acts of the MST are aimed at complying with article 184 of the federal Constitutionwhich refers to the expropriation, for purposes of agrarian reform, of land that does not fulfill its social function.
“They invaded a place with a social function. We occupy an unproductive area. A space that has nothing. Can’t compare”said the MST leader.
However, Rodrigues praised Carlos Fávaro’s management so far by calling him “competent” and say that “has played an important role with the Lula government”.
