evil dead rise (The Awakening in Latin America) hits theaters on April 20. Thanks to Warner Bros. I had the opportunity to see it before its theatrical release. That is why here I share what I thought of this new installment of the deadites.
What is Evil Dead Rise about?
This new installment of Evil Dead takes us to an apartment building about to be demolished. Here lives a mother with her three children, who also receives a visit from her sister, a guitar technician. By twists of fate they come into contact with the book of the dead, so hell literally breaks loose in their home.
Therefore, we accompany all these characters in their attempt to escape the dark mysteries of this book. All in a story full of horror, blood, violence and of course the black humor that has always accompanied this saga.
The principle of evil dead rise it gets to feel a bit slow. SHowever, once the massacre begins, the tension does not cease to be present. In addition to the fact that its introduction poses a mystery that has us intrigued until the credits roll.
Notably Although it sometimes falls into the clichés of horror movies, its script has quite creative and careful touches.. Not to mention, it has a palpable subplot that delves into the theme of motherhood. Nor can we ignore the fact that it has characters that you care about.
It’s not so horror, but it does have a lot of gore
Personally evil dead rise I didn’t find it very scary. She does have a few jump scares out there, but overall she’s not that scary. Of course, this does not diminish its quality at all and we could say that it makes up for it with a large amount of gore.
Blood, dismemberment and viscera are a constant in the saga. They come back here in huge numbers, which might turn off some more sensitive people. Plus director Lee Cronin delivers some very creative death scenes.
Alyssa Sutherland’s performance as the main villain is also worthy of applause. Physically she gets fully involved in the interpretation of a possessed woman. Her leaps from eerily calm to murderous rage can have you wondering what she’ll do next.
The final act also features some interesting scenarios for our protagonists’ escape. Not to mention a rather entertaining showdown that concludes with a blood fest and a promise of what could come next.
Evil Dead Rise becomes visually compelling
Another factor that was to my liking in evil dead rise It was his visual section. The lighting and the choice of shots contribute to the claustrophobic feel of the set. We come to feel locked up in these little apartments with family and demons.
The design of the latter also becomes aberrational to see. Especially when they’re contorting themselves and pulling out new disgusting ‘abilities’. Its union with the gloomy setting communicates very well the urgency of leaving this condemned building.
For all you Evil Dead fans out there, there are quite a few visual references throughout the film. Also, they are not hidden by any means, in fact they are quite obvious. But seeing them as they happen made me think that the director really has an understanding of what this franchise is.
Should you see her?
Although it may not be the most terrifying film, the journey that it presents us with seemed worth witnessing. As I said, it takes a while to get to conflict, but once the book of the dead is opened there is no going back. The tension and violence are kept at maximum power until the credits roll.
It’s a movie that I don’t think you’ll regret watching if you’re looking for a horror movie to pass the time. It should be noted that prior knowledge of previous installments is not necessary. Although having it for sure will make you appreciate it much more, since Evil Dead Rise delivers everything that captivates its fans. It also poses an interesting future and personally I wouldn’t mind seeing another addition to this horror saga.
