The Reuters news agency quoted Netanyahu as saying: “I am working to preserve the status quo and calm the situation.”
He added, “Israel is committed to ensuring freedom of worship and freedom of access for followers of all religions to Al-Aqsa Mosque, and is committed to the status quo.”
The Israeli prime minister stressed that his country “will not allow violent extremists to change that.”
On Tuesday evening, video footage showed the Israeli police storming the Al-Qibli prayer hall in Al-Aqsa Mosque, beating the worshipers, and arresting a number of them.
And the Sky News Arabia correspondent reported that more than 80 people, including serious injuries, were injured during the police attempt to remove the seclusion from the courtyards of the mosque.
Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt condemned the Israeli forces’ storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Concurrently, the Arab League said it would hold an emergency meeting this afternoon, Wednesday, to discuss the Israeli police raid on Al-Aqsa Mosque.
