The numbers speak for themselves: in the first quarter of 2023, 4,401 charging points were installed in Italy (a new record) for electric or plug-in hybrid cars, bringing the total to 41,173. Let’s talk about an increase of around 340 new top-up points per week. A value never reached before and which has contributed to reaching 13,316 charging points installed in the last 12 months (+47.8%). In exactly two years, the number of charging points in Italy practically doubled: from 20,757 to 41,173.
Of course, there is always the problem related to the fact that the infrastructure distribution is all concentrated in the north. Even if a slight recovery can now be observed in the South and Islands, now at 21% of the total, which gain a percentage point of share compared to the North (57% of the total) and are approaching the level of the Center (22%). Lombardy is confirmed as the region with the most charging points (6,661), ahead of the trio made up of Piedmont (4,215), Veneto (4,169) and Lazio (4,032). Emilia-Romagna closes the top 5 (3,732), with Campania which for its part earns a special mention for the most marked leap forward: since the beginning of the year, the charging points in the Region have increased from 1,184 to 2,145 (+ 81%).
The strategies
“The new growth record of charging points is a very important signal and market data show a growing propensity of motorists towards electric”, observe the general secretary of Motus-E, Francesco Naso, “unfortunately we are still far from the market share levels of countries like France and Germany, already in the order of 14-15%, but the numbers show that BEV registrations could still grow a lot with a rationalization of the resources already allocated to stimulate request. I’m thinking of incentives for individuals, but also for fleets”.
