Kinnunen worked as a political reporter for four decades.
For a long time line policy reporter Karolus Kinnunen has died at the age of 91 on Friday, March 24.
His family tells Helsingin Sanomat about Kinnusen’s passing. Kinnunen suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for a long time and died in a nursing home.
Kinnunen worked at Helsingin Sanom and Ilta-Sanom as a political editor and head of the political editorial office in the years 1956–1986. His original first name was Kaarlo, but he adopted the name Karolus to avoid confusion with an agronomist of the same name.
Helsinki While working as a journalist at Sanomat, Kinnunen was caught in the middle of a historic moment in 1972. Former prime minister and key influencer of the Center Party Ahti Karjalainen called the editorial office of Helsingin Sanomat and said that he was proposing the president Urho Kekkonen continuation of the season by exception.
Kinnunen answered that call and went to Karjalainen’s home to get a written proposal. The proposal started a tangle of political twists, which finally ended with the adoption of the exception law in 1973 and the continuation of Kekkonen’s reign.
