Aiden Fucci, 16, was 14 when he stabbed Tristyn Bailey to death more than 100 times, according to prosecutors. On Friday, a Florida judge sentenced him to life in prison for the first-degree murder of his 13-year-old classmate in 2021. His lawyers had requested a 40-year sentence.
“This case is probably the most difficult and shocking that St. Johns County has ever dealt with.”, assured Judge R. Lee Smith, before announcing the life sentence.
Prior to his trial, the teenager had pleaded guilty in February of this year. He was 14 when he killed his partner, in the St. Johns County woods, but was charged as an adult. He was ineligible for the death penalty because of his age at the time of the crime. His case could be reviewed in 25 years, according to Florida law.
I can’t provide closure to this. It may close a chapter, but… I can’t bring her back
During the process, investigators revealed that he had told friends that he planned to kill someone, although it was unclear if the teenager was his target from the beginning. When they found her, she had been stabbed 114 times and had 49 defensive wounds to her head, hands and arms., alleged the state’s attorney. In addition, the attacker’s DNA was found on his body.
At Friday’s sentencing, Circuit Judge R. Lee Smith explained that several factors went into his decision, including Fucci’s age, a high level of premeditation, that he had acted alone and was not pressured by anyone. . Bailey “suffered a painful and horrible death at the hands of someone he trusted”Smith said before announcing the sentence, in statements reported by CNN. “I can’t provide closure to this,” he continued: “I may close a chapter, but… I can’t bring her back.”. Fucci will have 30 days to appeal the sentence.
Who is Aiden Fucci?
According to the testimonies of friends and family, the teenager fantasized about violence and crime. On the day of Bailey’s death, Fucci was treated as a witness before he was charged. He also posted a photo of a police vehicle on social media that read, “Guys, has anyone seen Tristyn lately?”
After admitting his guilt, he presented his apology on paper. News4JAX had access to letters from Fucci’s family members, including from the mother.
The young man wrote:First of all I want to say that I am sorry. I’m sorry for all the pain I’ve caused the Bailey family. Sorry to friends, brothers, sisters, mom, dad and any other relatives in the family. I’m sorry you didn’t get to know her that long. They did not have a long relationship with Tristyn and for that I am sorry.

Aiden Fucci and his partner had attended Patriot Oaks Academy and were caught on surveillance camera walking together on the day of the young woman’s death. Agents also found bloodstained clothing in the teen’s bedroom, as well as the sheath of the knife used as a murder weapon.
Initially, he had been charged with second-degree murder, but prosecutors argued that clues suggested premeditation and upgraded the charge to first-degree murder.
A report released by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office in July 2021 revealed that Fucci was a heavy cannabis user and had vented fantasies about killing. A friend of the young man stated that he always believed that this was a survival mechanism for his supposedly difficult family life.
Before trial, the teen was booked into the Duval County Jail. According to First Coast News, he got into physical fights and on one occasion had to be pepper-sprayed.
The statements of the Bailey and Fucci families
Friday’s sentencing followed two days of testimony. Members of the Bailey family read their emotional statements in court. Her older sister, Alexis Bailey, dropped 114 aquamarine hearts into a jar, one for each stab wound her sister took from her.
Deborah Spiwak, the teenager’s grandmother, pleaded for mercy for her grandson. “Please don’t take him out of our lives forever. I know there is something good in Aiden,” she said. The judge mentioned that comment and praised his courage: “He showed this court that he had a good and stable family environment.”
For his part, the victim’s father, Forrest Bailey, shared an emotional message for his murdered daughter. “Tristyn, I wanted you to know that we are extremely proud of the person you were in the time you were here.” He also thanked the prosecutor, sheriff and judge for the life sentence and asked people to be nice to the Fucci family.
