A coincidence brought to light a very old treasure in Poland. Using a metal detector, a Pole found coins from the 17th century.
Lublin/Munich – “Who seeks will find” is a well-known saying. Often a lot can be found when searching – just not what was actually searched for. A similar thing happened to a man in Poland. However, what he discovered near the city of Lublin can be classified as a real treasure.
Accidental treasure find with metal detector in Poland
On February 26, at the request of a relative, Michal Lotys went in search of part of an agricultural machine. Armed with a metal detector, however, he should stumble upon something else entirely. According to a Facebook post by the local monument conservator, the Pole discovered a 17th-century coin hoard. He reported his accidental find to the local monument conservator.

A day later, on February 27, experts secured the find. As can be seen in the pictures, these are coins in a damaged ceramic jug. The mug, which weighs almost three kilograms, contained around 1,000 coins, according to Facebook. The Lithuanian crowns and shillings are said to be around 400 years old.
In the jug, the experts also found a cloth in which the coins were probably once wrapped. As announced on Facebook, the find is to be sent to the archeology department of a museum in Biala Podlaska (Lublin).
Whether the actual part of an agricultural machine they were looking for could still be found remains to be seen. The excitement and the sensation surrounding the coins was probably just too big.
