Meeting with the FIA
Esteban Ocon he was in spite of himself among the protagonists of the Bahrain GP which opened the 2023 Formula 1 season. The Frenchman from Alpine, ninth in qualifying on the Sakhir track, saw his race destroyed by a sequence of three penalties ringed one after the other. Above all, the first one caused the most discussion, which kicked off the nightmare Sunday of #31. Indeed Ocon was incorrectly placed on the grid, collecting for this reason the first penalty of his season. In a press conference in Jeddah, speaking with journalists on the eve of the second Grand Prix of the year, Ocon revealed that he had also had a conversation with the men of the international federation precisely regarding the penalty from which it all arose. The FIA’s explanation towards him is clear: his Alpine was too advanced and moved to the right with respect to the correct position on the grid.
Matter of location
“We admit our mistakes in Bahrain, we are clearly wrong. There is a saying that when it rains, it pours. That’s what happened to us in Bahrain. Collectively we’re usually very good at these types of trades, but we weren’t this time. I had a meeting with the FIA to understand exactly what happened, now everything is clear and let’s move on – underlined Ocon, who did not even see the checkered flag in Bahrain, due to withdrawal – basically I was [troppo a destra] and this is where confusion can arise, because I was too married to the right and also across the line. Unfortunately with these cars you don’t see very well, especially when you are on the starting grid. You can see the yellow line as a reference, but it’s up to me to fix this.”. Now the goal for the transalpine driver is to repeat the excellent result obtained in Bahrain on Saturday in Jeddah – a track statistically friendly to Ocon – possibly repeating it this time also in the race.
