The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has returned to warn about the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukrainewhich was once again disconnected from the electricity grid due to the Russian missile attacks of the past few hours.
Addressing the board of governors of the IAEA, Grossi underlined that Urgent action is required to ensure site security. “Once again the Zaporizhzhia NPP is running on standby diesel, the last line of defence. This is the sixth time, let me repeat the sixth time, that the plant has had to operate in this standby mode. Let me remind you that this is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe,” Grossi said, quoted by the BBC.
“What are we doing to prevent this from happening? We are the IAEA and we have to worry about nuclear safety”, added the director general, who always referring to the risks of Russian attacks on the plant explained that “every time it’s like we roll the dice. And if we allow this to continue, one day our luck will run out“. “I ask everyone in this room today and elsewhere – he concluded – we must commit ourselves to guaranteeing the safety and protection of the plant. And we must engage Now. What we need is action.”
