Ibama informed on Thursday night, the 23rd, that the federal base installed two weeks ago in the Palimiú village, in the Yanomami indigenous land, in Roraima, was the target of an attack. Armed criminals broke through the blockade set up on the Uraricoera River and shot at Ibama agents who had boarded one of the vessels. The inspectors retaliated. In the shootout, one of the prospectors was injured. He was detained by the Federal Police (PF) for attacking public servants and was hospitalized until Thursday night.
The criminals went down the river in seven 12-meter “voadeiras” loaded with cassiterite. The shipment of ore stolen from the indigenous land was identified by drones operated by Ibama. After the attack, the criminals fled. Security at the control base, installed on the 7th, is carried out by agents of the National Public Security Force, the Federal Highway Police and Ibama.
The main objective of the base is to prevent the entry of boats with supplies and equipment for prospecting in the Yanomami territory. Since the installation of a physical barrier with steel cables, on the 20th, no loaded boat has gone towards the mines.
“It was a programmed criminal attack. Anyone who tries to break through the blockade will be arrested. Putting an end to illegal mining is President Lula’s determination,” said Ibama president Rodrigo Agostinho. Ibama asked the PF to reinforce security at the base.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Federal District opened two civil investigations related to the protection of indigenous people during the Jair Bolsonaro government. The administration of the former head of the Executive is already in the crosshairs of investigations by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Roraima about alleged lack of assistance to native peoples, especially the Yanomami. He is also the target of an investigation into alleged genocide, omission of aid and environmental crimes.
The new investigations were officially opened by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office based on preparatory procedures that were already being processed by the Attorney General’s Office. The ordinances for the initiation of the inquiries were signed on the last 13th.
One of them will address the possible practice of administrative impropriety in the management of the National Indian Foundation (Funai). The other deals with alleged irregularity in the use, by the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, of only 44% of the budget planned for 2020, “impacting programs linked to policies to protect indigenous and quilombola populations”.
The Bolsonaro government is already the target of other investigations involving the protection of indigenous peoples. At the end of January, the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Roraima opened a civil investigation to determine how “actions and omissions” by public agents contributed to the humanitarian crisis in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, in the context of other ongoing investigations, there is already “a vast collection of evidence for the immediate accountability” of the State for the crisis that devastates the indigenous community.
