Two hundred and twenty-one people who a few days ago spent a few days on vacation on the islands of Cape Verde, North West Africawere diagnosed with severe episodes of diarrhea.
Another 37 tourists experienced the disease and are under observation in their respective countries.

According to European authorities referenced by Semana magazine, “This is the largest outbreak of diarrhea detected in recent years and which include citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom and different countries of the old continent”.
The patients began to present the signs of stomach upset when they were already back in their countries.
As revealed by the aforementioned medium, most of those affected were staying in the Santa María region, located on the island of Sal, in five-star hotels, with unlimited lodging and food.
According to Semana, the investigations carried out by health entities, point to the bacterium Shigella sonnei It is the origin of the massive outbreak.
This strain is one of the four groups of bacteria that cause this type of disease.

Semana revealed that based on the investigations of those in charge of tracking the disease, it is most likely that “the transmission of this has occurred through food or some of its infected handlers”
However, it is not ruled out that “contagion from person to person has occurred, which may be possible, according to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).”
The World Health Organization (WHO) is already in contact with the Cape Verdean health authorities to establish what caused this outbreak of diarrhea and also to contain it.
