The CX-80 with six-in-line comes to the old continent
As you know, there are fans of cars with a six-line engine and rear-wheel drive in the editorial office. Now we all shout: BMW! But there are many more brands that use this combination in terms of layout. It’s the layout like Dear Heyr meant it.
Six-in-line with rear-wheel drive
Although more and more brands say goodbye to the six-in-line and rear-wheel drive, there are a few exceptions.
Jaguar Land Rover applies the weather, as does Mercedes-Benz. A surprising name is Mazda. That stubborn brand from Hiroshima introduces a few crossovers with six-in-line in a short time.
And yes, they are four-wheel drive, but basically it is a rear-wheel drive car with its character. So a superior weight distribution and less understeer.
Good news, the Mazda CX-80 with six-in-line is coming to Europe! This is reported by Martijn ten Brink – the Mazda CEO Automotive News Europe.
CX-80 with six-in-line to Europe
In the Netherlands we have the CX-60, one of those new crossovers. A six-in-line in that car is possible abroad, but we Dutch only get the plug-in hybrid. That will probably be the same with the CX-80. So the CX-80 with six-in-line will come to Europe, but not to the Netherlands.
That means a 2.5 four-cylinder petrol engine (SkyActiv, of course) and an electric motor. The system power is 327 hp and the system torque is 500 Nm. But if you live in a country with a different tax regime, you can order that six-cylinder in-line engine.
Difference with CX-60
The CX-80 will look a lot like the CX-60. A big difference is that the CX-80 is equipped with a third row of seats. To make things even more confusing, the CX-90 has just been launched in the US. In principle, the CX-60 and CX-90 are related.
They both use the same platform: Mazda Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture. So the CX-80 will in fact be a long CX-60. In addition to being a bit longer, the Mazda CX-90 is also a bit wider than the CX-60 (and presumably also the CX-80).
Any further Mazda news?
Of course! You can no longer order the CX-3. This compact crossover has been retired and will not receive a successor. Mazda is also looking at possibilities to use the Wankel engine in more plug-in hybrids.
According to Ten Brink, the technology is easy to apply in the CX-30 and 3. Also, 40 to 70 percent of all Mazdas will be fully electric by 2030. At the moment, Mazda has only one electric model on the market with the MX-30.
