Ford is preparing to build a lithium-iron-phosphate battery plant of 3.5 billion dollars in Michigan. The final announcement is expected by the end of this week, there is a high probability that it will be made as early as tomorrow. The details of the project are still unknown, but it seems that the automaker of the blue oval will manage the plant in question with the Chinese CATLwith which it will also share ownership of the plant as technology partner for battery development.
According to the latest rumors reported by Reuters, the production site should be located in the Marshall area, precisely in Michigan: once its construction is completed, it will take at least 2,500 workers. Ford’s choice to focus on the mother country to build the batteries that will have the task of powering its future electric cars is not accidental: in fact, we recall that the law in force in the United States links the disbursement of tax credits of 7,500 dollars to the obligation of assembly in North America and the origin of critical minerals in the United States or in a country with a free trade agreement with Washington. And since Ford will have outright ownership of the plant, it will be able to guarantee that the batteries are produced locally will benefit from tax credits. In July of last year, moreover, Ford had announced its intention to build a 40 GWh battery production plant in North America: the assembly operations of the units that will power the company’s future EVs should be fully operational starting from 2026.
Not only that, Ford also announced at the time that it had reached an agreement with CATL to explore their supply of battery packs for Mustang Mach-E for North America starting this year, effectively anticipating that they would then expand this collaboration to other areas of the world. At the moment, both Ford and CATL have declined to comment on the rumors, but as anticipated already in the next few days official announcements are expected.
