Digital platforms would be obliged to remove content that is considered illegal
The President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said on Friday (10.Feb.2023) that the bill underway in Congress to combat fake news on the internet must contemplate “minimal regulation, including of big techs”.
“We were unable to vote in the pre-election period due to the already known polarization. The only way for us to have responsible regulation of social networks is via a bill. It will be discussed in the Chamber jointly with the Senate so that there is no change [quando voltar ao Senado]”, said Lira to journalists visiting Vitória, in Espírito Santo.
“We are going to make an effort and involve everyone so that this problem has a minimum regulation, including big techs, so that they behave responsibly in Brazil. It is important to have clear legislation”, he completed.
After the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília, on January 8, the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) asked the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, to evaluate the elaboration of an MP (Provisional Measure) that obliges digital platforms to remove content that is considered illegal after order of the Judiciary.
On Thursday (Feb 9), however, the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilhaindicated that the government should not edit a MP, but rather act to contemplate the idea in the bill of fake news which is being processed in Congress, aligned with Lira.
In the same interview, the president of the Chamber said that the PP, União Brasil and Avante are working to create a federation. According to him, the federations facilitate the processing of matters.
Lira also said that the Mining Code “is ready to be discussed and taken to the plenary of the House”. The text was approved by the Chamber’s working group at the end of 2022. “It is an important theme, which needs to have a more modern finish. The current code does not allow different specific situations of exploitation, commercialization, prospecting, licenses. With more modern code, we hope to solve this problem.”
