The Israeli government classified the episode as a terrorist attack.
The man identified as Hussein Karakeh crashed his car into a bus stop, located at an intersection in the Ramot neighborhood. The attack has been classified as a terrorist act by the Israeli government.
Hussein Karakeh was killed shortly afterwards by police officers who were at the scene. He was a resident of Issawiya in East Jerusalem and had been married for 4 months.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, congratulated the police for killing the terrorist and offered condolences to the victims.
“Our response to terrorism is to attack it with all our might and to further deepen our grip on our country”he said in his profile on twitter.
After the attack, Netanyahu announced that the terrorist’s house would be sealed off and demolished.
National Security Minister Ben Gabir ordered barriers to be placed in the Issawija neighborhood and that all people entering and leaving the site be inspected.
Gabir also said that he intends to speed up the formalization of a law that allows the death penalty for terrorists and a series of other measures to “restore deterrence”.
Radical Palestinian Islamist movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad praised the attack. So far neither of the 2 groups has claimed the attack.
Conflict Escalation
On January 27th, a shooting attack on a synagogue left 7 dead, also in East Jerusalem. The attack would have been a response to an Israeli operation the day before, when Israeli soldiers killed at least 9 Palestiniansincluding an elderly woman, in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the attack left another 20 people injured by gunfire. Four of them are in serious condition.
The attack escalated the crisis between the Palestine and Israel and the fear of a larger conflict by the international community.
After the deaths, the Islamic Jihada Palestinian militant group focused on fighting Israel, threatened end the truce negotiated with the country in August 2022.
On that occasion, in an interview with Reuters, Hazem Qassem, a spokesman for Hamas, Palestine’s main Islamist movement, said “The operation is a response to occupation-led crime in Jenin and a natural response to the occupation’s criminal actions.”
