Oscar nominated. The film directed by the Swede Ruben Östlund competes for best film, direction and original screenplay.
The satire on millionaires directed by the Swede Ruben Östlund was considered one of the best films of 2022. triangle of sadness (Triangle of sadness) begins with an audition where they explain to the male models how to smile, according to the brands. Then a fashion show that has the phrase “We are all equal”, while the hostesses force those in the front row to give up their seats to the guests. The winning film at the Cannes Film Festival and who competes in the Oscars, takes us to the, at least, failed walk of a couple of young models and influencers who, thanks to their appearance, were invited to the luxurious space where the powerful will be. In charge is a socialist captain (Woody Harrelson).
“I was thinking one plus one plus one: the fashion world, the luxury world, the deserted island. She wanted to spend time in all three. And I said, ‘Okay, let’s talk about class society in these three settings,’” the filmmaker said after he premiered the film at the Cannes Film Festival.
The crew members are ordered to accept any request from the passengers, and one of the turning points of the film that opens in Peru (on February 23), is the dinner offered by the captain. The director proposes scenes of intoxication without limits. Östlund spent six months editing a sequence and said that to offer the character to Harrelson he advanced the scenes. “You’re going to play a Marxist captain and you’re going to read from The Communist Manifesto to making guests vomit on a luxury yacht.” He was like ‘Wow. This is great'”.

The director, boyfriend of the fashion photographer Sina Görcz, was at the Göteborg Festival in Sweden and explained his intention to talk about influencers, beauty, overdrawn cards, gender equality and transfer them to a luxurious yacht that will end up in ruins, with a love story opposite to titanic. “They are influencers in the hands of big tech companies that are totally controlled by algorithms, and it’s hard to know what advertising is. An entire generation is being raised by 14-year-olds selling makeup products. It is dangerous. Previously, we could influence what our children saw. Today, the biggest influencers are 14-year-olds with audiences larger than public service children’s television.”
The title suggests the phrase attributed by the aesthetics industry to refer to the space on the forehead where wrinkles form. “She needs Botox,” they say to a model in her twenties. Triángulo de la tristeza is a social satire in which the passengers and crew lose their hierarchy for a few days. “There is a place that still has a tradition where people curate the content, the cinema. Where humans say, ‘We want to see this.’ Where someone can ask us what we think”.
