The Minister of Defense, José Múcio, denied on Tuesday night (10.jan.2023) that he will resign from his position. “The information circulating on social media is completely false”, he declared.
The comment was in response to rumors circulating on the internet. the federal deputy André Janones (Avante-MG) is among those who shared the information. “Defense Minister José Múcio is expected to hand in his resignation letter in the coming hours”, tweeted on the night of Tuesday (10.jan).
Just over half an hour later, he wrote: “I received information about the minister’s resignation from a source that, so far, has proven to be safe and reliable. However, Minister José Múcio denies that he will resign”.
In an interview with journalists after taking office last week, Múcio said that he had friends and family camped at the Army HQ. At the time, he stated that it was “a manifestation of democracy” and assessed that it would end soon.
“We have to understand that not all opponents are enemies. I think that in a little while that will fade away and reach a place that we all want”, said the Minister of Defense at the exit of the event.
Speech was frowned upon by members of the government itself and gained repercussions after the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers, on Sunday (8.jan).
Despite assessing internally that the Minister of Defense was wrong in assessing the possible peaceful demobilization of right-wing extremist camps, Planalto unified the discourse to protect him.
As determined by Power360there are 2 relevant factors for the minister to be retained:
- his eventual departure would be considered a victory for the extremists and would weaken a government trying to demonstrate strength;
- the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) does not have a substitute. It was difficult to find a profile like Múcio’s for the position – with a conservative background and good political transit from left to right, including with the military. It is also estimated that the minister did “a favor” when accepting the position, as he was very well positioned in the private sector.
