Binge eating at night, also called in English Night Eating Syndrome (NES), is a pathology that leads those who suffer from it to compulsively eat in the evening and at night, in larger quantities than in the rest of the day. Let’s find out more together!
The syndrome of Night eatingNES, is a syndrome that is part of eating disorders, with the presence of a psychological component, and is characterized by the concomitance of three distinct phases:
- morning anorexia;
- insomnia;
- nocturnal hyperphagia (which can even become compulsive with the consequence that one practically spends the night in front of the fridge).
This triggers a vicious circlewith negative consequences on thebiological clock both in regards to sleep and for the power supply.
This syndrome has been discovered quite recently and has an incidence of1.5% of the world population, with a female predominance. Characteristic of industrialized and wealthy societies, it is practically absent in poor countries and in those developing.
Night Eating Syndrome: What is it?
There NES makes its appearance around the 30-40 years old, but the fact remains that its onset may also coincide with the appearance of the first disturbances of the power supply, then in age adolescent.
The causes are essentially related to the modern lifestyle, which often forces to frenetic pace which most of the time do not give the possibility to have a normal meal in the middle of the day, but only a sandwich on the fly, and go; the recommendations to carve out, during the day, a space to dedicate to yourself and to a friend are worthless normal meal.
The consequence of these frenzied rhythms and this rough diet is a feeling of biological hunger which occurs in the only quiet moment of the day, the night.
And so then after 2-3 hours of falling asleep you wake up with the feeling of hunger to appease and we run to the kitchen to storm the fridge; and this will happen for 2-3 times at night.
To appease the feeling of anxiety and of hunger, preference will be given to foods rich in fats, sugars and carbohydrates, after which it will be possible to go back to bed, but only temporarily, because after a while you will find yourself in same conditions as before.
Those afflicted with NES take overnight durations until 70.5% of daily calorieswith inevitable consequences on physical fitness.
It is a difficult disorder to cure, so in addition to psychotherapy and a adequate pharmacological support, it will be necessary to resort to a careful food dietbut above all it will be necessary to learn to better manage one’s times and one’s diet during the day, starting from morning breakfast.
