Two days before the end of his mandate, the outgoing Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro left the capital Brasilia: from the presidential residence Palácio da Alvorada he was transferred by car to the air force base where he took off on one of the presidential planes, reported the local media. Bolsonaro’s mandate ends on New Year’s Eve, when his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be sworn in. Bolsonaro will not be present at the handover. According to local media, Bolsonaro would have flown to the United States: some of his assistants would in fact have been authorized to accompany him to Florida, an authorization valid for the entire month of January. Since his electoral defeat in late October, Bolsonaro has hardly appeared. Today he greeted his followers with a video message.
While during the day he revoked the measure banning Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro from entering Brazil, thus opening the door to his participation in Lula’s inauguration on Sunday.
The provision was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, and by the head of Justice, Antonio Ramirez Lorenzo. In addition to Maduro, it also involves other senior officials banned for years by the Bolsonaro executive, according to ‘O Globo’.
The outgoing president of Brazil recognizes Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, while his successor had already made it clear that he will open a new chapter in relations with Caracas, with the expected appointment of a new ambassador in the short term. Maduro has already announced a new ambassador in Brasilia in recent days.
