It’s not the first time that Akio Toyoda expresses perplexity about the transition to electric mobility, understood as full electric. The president of Toyota has repeatedly argued that a forced transition with a single technology would not be the right solution for pursuing sustainability, underlining the importance and contribution of other types of systems as well. Starting from the hybrid that the Japanese car manufacturer has been carrying out for over 20 years. The number one of the Japanese giant has returned to the subject again a few weeks after the new decarbonization strategy developed by Toyota which pushes yes. strong on all-electric models but still continuing to offer technological alternatives.
Precisely on this issue Toyoda has no doubts, highlighting how hybrid and hydrogen are increasingly recognized at institutional and sector level as solutions that offer an immediate contribution in terms of emission reduction: “The answer is not yet clear, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just one option. Electric cars aren’t the only way to reduce emissions. Hybrids can have an immediate impact on decarbonisation and alternatives to EVs, such as hydrogen fuel cell models, are increasingly recognized by governments, the media and many manufacturers”.
However, the Toyota boss is not the only one wondering about this topic ea raise doubts on the route, forced, traced by the institutions. Even Carlos Tavares, who heads the new giant Stellantis, had in fact underlined how the high costs of electric models, the poor infrastructure and the monopoly of raw materials and the most important components represent a real risk not only for motorists but also for the whole sector. Alongside Tavares and Toyoda there would be others who question this technological breakthrough, as Toyota’s number one claims: “There is a silent majority in our industry who are questioning whether electric vehicles are really any good as the only option for the future. Many think it’s just a fad and can’t raise their voices”.
