Mirko and Sinisa Mihajlovic met in 2020 and both celebrated their victories against leukemia
Little Mirko, the 11-year-old boy who defeated leukemia and who in 2020, thanks to Hyenashe had met his idol Sinisa Mihajlovic, wrote and published a moving farewell letter to the Serbian coach. The two, as well as by their passion for football, were linked by the sad fate of a very serious illness.
Last December 16, the world of Italian football and sport in general learned with enormous sadness of the disappearance of Sinisa Mihajlovic.
The former Serbian footballer and coach has lost his battle against myeloid leukemia against which he had been fighting for three and a half years. Unfortunately, the cycles of therapy to which he underwent proved to be useless, as well as the bone marrow transplant carried out in 2020.
Shortly after that transplant, when the hopes of having defeated the disease were kindled, the coach had the pleasure of meeting Mirkoan 11-year-old boy who, like him, had fought against leukemia and had recently had a transplant.
Their meeting was reported in a touching service de Hyenaswho had accompanied the child to the Bologna sports center making him spend a day together to his idol Sinisa.
Mirko’s letter to Sinisa Mihajlovic
Today Mirko, like everyone and perhaps a little more, mourns the loss of his idol but above all friend sinisa. The child wrote and published, with the help of his parents, a heartbreaking letter dedicated to the Serbian coach. Here it is below:
It’s 2.02pm on December 14th and I’ve just left school. ‘Maybe the coach can’t do it’, my mother tells me. Six words are enough. I take a paper and a pencil. That November 18, 2020 passes in front of me, one of the best days of my life. Me, with a great champion, a great man. Everything was going right. For you and me, at least as far as my eleven-year-old eyes could see.
I remember the punch you threw at the punching bag, how scary! I remember the day of your conference, when you announced leukemia. I think back to the videos of your punishments. I see the man again, the warrior he trained, despite everything.
I think back on how lucky I was and I regret not being able to give you even a sliver of my luck. I put on the shirt you gave me, I can see you, hug you, talk. You can’t answer me, but that’s okay. I know deep down you are. You taught us to fight head-on, not to give up. Many thanks are not enough Sinisa, but I owe you all. Have a good trip.
