A few days have now passed since the official announcement of the new Ferrari team principal for the 2023 season, yet the world of F1 still seems to revolve largely around the internal events of the Prancing Horse team. L’farewell by Mattia Binottowho the leaders of Maranello have decided to replace with the former boss of Alfa Romeo Frederic Vasseur, sparked mixed reactions among fans. There were those who appreciated the discontinuity sanctioned by this choice, contesting Binotto’s incapacity shown by Ferrari to be able to compete in the long term with Red Bull for the conquest of the world titles during the last season; however, many Ferrari enthusiasts also demonstrated perplexity, wondering if yet another change at the pit wall really represents the right recipe for taking the missing step towards the World Championship.
These doubts have also been joined by those who in theory of Ferrari are one of the main antagonists. Let’s talk about Helmut Marko, historic Red Bull consultant and Christian Horner’s right-hand man in the team’s operational management. The Austrian manager, often outspoken in his analyzes but a profound connoisseur of motorsport and F1, has in fact taken the defense of Binotto. While admitting that Ferrari often lacked strategically during the season that just ended, Marko underlined the professional qualities of the now former red team principal, judging the one made by the Cavallino to be a mistake by agreeing to deprive himself of him.
“In the case of Ferrari, I don’t quite understand the change – commented Marko during a long interview given to the German site Auto Motor und Sport – I consider Binotto an excellent coach and politician. He was simply overwhelmed by his task. But it would have been enough to provide him with a sporting director who supported him on the track and with the strategy. The advent of a new man, who has many other tasks, I see as a weakening for Ferrari”. Marko’s reference is to the many commitments of Frederic Vasseur, who, however, at the time of taking office in Ferrari should completely get rid of his other interests ‘extraneous’ to team management. However, the new ‘red’ Vasseur has nonetheless taken on a double role, combining the duties of team principal with those of general manager.
