The Palestinian-Israeli settlement suffers from a shift in U.S. and allied attention to the Ukraine crisis. This was announced on November 28 at a meeting of the UN Security Council by the First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.
The Russian diplomat noted that the Middle East problem “becomes a bargaining chip in a series of election campaigns in Israel.”
“And it is being actively squeezed out of the international agenda by the United States, which has blocked the efforts of the Middle East Quartet and the adoption of any significant decisions in the UN Security Council. In addition, as we heard today from the special coordinator, the Middle East settlement is also suffering due to the prioritization of the Ukrainian crisis by the United States and its allies,” Polyansky said.
The growing escalation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was noted by all members of the Security Council. At the same time, they noted that it has become the deadliest since 2005.
As a result of Israeli military actions in the West Bank of the Jordan River, more than 130 people have already died this year, which made this year the bloodiest since 2005, the diplomat stressed.
“At the same time, Israel’s arbitrary illegal actions go beyond the West Bank of the Jordan River and the Gaza Strip, affecting neighboring Arab countries with numerous episodes of violations of their sovereignty, including for carrying out strikes on the territory of Syria and Lebanon,” Polyansky said.
He recalled that Russia opposes such protection of national security by creating threats to other countries. There are no prospects for reviving the peace process, which has been frozen since 2015, Polyansky concluded.
Earlier, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East settlement Thor Vennesland pointed to the changed dynamics in the region of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as well as the shift in the priorities of states to the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine. As a result, the attention of states to the conflict between Israel and Palestine has decreased.
Earlier, on November 23, two explosions occurred at bus stops in Jerusalem, 22 people were injured, one died. Currently, the police are on duty in all tourist places in Jerusalem.
There have been no such attacks with bombs in the country since 2016. The harsh reaction of the Israeli military may be followed by an escalation on the part of the Palestinians – in Gaza, according to media reports, they are already preparing for large-scale clashes.
