Teacher Flávia Amboss Merçon, 38, became this Saturday, 26, the fourth victim of the attack on two schools carried out by a 16-year-old armed teenager on Friday (25) in Aracruz, Espírito Santo. Four other people, including two children, remain hospitalized in serious condition. Before confirming the fourth death, the police had informed that the young man should be indicted for an offense similar to three qualified homicides and ten attempted murders.
The teenager’s father, in an interview with Estadão, said that the son did “something terrible” and that he will apologize to the families of the victims in “an opportune moment”. “My son committed something terrible, which I could never have even imagined”, commented he, who is a lieutenant in the Espírito Santo Military Police. The government confirmed that the young man used two weapons belonging to his father in the attack, one of which belonged to the Military Police.
The official had published on social networks a photo of the cover of the book “My Fight”, in which Adolf Hitler exposed his anti-Semitic ideas. The publication generated debates with people associating the father with the son’s action, since the teenager wore a piece with Nazi emblems. “You want to know about Hitler’s biography book. Lousy book. I read it and hated it,” said the policeman. The officer declined to comment on how the son had access to his gun and the family car and asked that his pain be respected.
Commotion
Since Friday night, flowers and candles have been left outside the Primo Bitti School, the first place invaded by the shooter, in the peaceful neighborhood of Coqueiral de Aracruz. Feelings of sadness and outrage were commonplace among those in attendance and the community throughout the Sabbath.
Upon arrival in the city, it was possible to see the queue of cars that formed in front of the chapel that housed the wake of student Selena Sagrillo, 12 years old. Among the many present, attention was drawn to the number of teenagers wearing black clothes and accompanied by their parents.
One of them, Maria Eduarda Oliveira Vervloet, 11, was a friend and classmate and told how it all happened. “I was in a room below where the killer was. I heard the sound of shots, looked up and saw the murderer. One of the coordinators who was with me also went to see what it was and she came running back, with a scared face, and took us in a hurry to a club next to the school. I was very scared and I don’t want to go back”, she commented next to her mother, Renata Curto, 47 years old.
The mother rushed to the scene when she heard about the attack through a messaging app and reiterates her daughter’s wishes: “It’s very difficult to go back. It was a very big trauma and the parents don’t feel safe”.
According to Simoni Bianchini, mother of one of the survivors and a former teacher at the school, words are lacking to describe what happened. “We are speechless to explain what happened in such a quiet neighborhood. We always had some problems at school, common student things, but nothing close to this. Not what we saw yesterday (Friday). I panicked,” she said.
Desolation was also seen at the wake of Maria da Penha Pereira de Melo Baths, 48, one of the teachers killed in the attack. Widower Wellington Baths said he heard about the attack through his seven-year-old daughter. “My daughter texted me, I went to the hospital to check and went to school. But there, I wanted to see her, hug her. But I couldn’t, ”she said. No information was disclosed about the wake of teacher Cybelle Passos Bezerra Lara, 45 years old.
